SeaTecHub Citizen Club in Karnagio – Clean-up

On the 19th of May, AKTI hosted a SeaTecHub Citizen Club event in collaboration with TeamUp and Blue Thunder Diving, two passionate local organizations from Limassol. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about blue growth and blue technologies, while involving citizens directly in preserving our marine environment.

AKTI brought together over 100 volunteers in Karnagio, Limassol, to raise awareness about the blue economy and the power of citizen science. The event kicked off with a beach and seabed cleanup at Karnagio, Limassol.

After the cleanup, participants, under the guidance of AKTI, engaged in meaningful discussions about how individual efforts can contribute to the broader vision of healthy and productive seas. Many acknowledged their limited understanding of how they, as individuals, could support the advancement of blue growth. These conversations helped ignite a new wave of ocean literacy, highlighting the role of citizen science in protecting our seas.

During the discussions, the feedback was clear: 80% believe Cyprus should move faster towards sustainable blue growth!

Participants also identified gaps in their knowledge about:

  • 🌍 Climate change and its relation to the blue economy
  • 🌱 The European Green Deal
  • 🔵 Blue technologies
  • 💙 Blue growth
  • 🚮 Marine litter

AKTI team and volunteers massively collected almost 1 tonne of litter.

The clean-up was enhanced by the cooperation of Blue Thunder Diving team.
