The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) was proud to participate in the 6th annual conference of the Cyprus Statistical Society, held at UCLan Cyprus on the 30th May 2025. This high-level event brought together statisticians, researchers, and professionals from across Europe to explore how statistical innovation is shaping the future of society, the environment, and policy.
🔍 CMMI contributed to the conference by presenting a novel approach to non-linear marine spatial zoning, using particle filtering techniques to tackle the complexities of dynamic ocean environments. This cutting-edge methodology demonstrates how data assimilation and probabilistic modeling can support more adaptive, science-informed decision-making in marine spatial planning (MSP).
🌐 In addition, CMMI showcased ongoing work within the SeaTecHub project, highlighting how the initiative is advancing capacity-building and innovation in marine spatial planning. As part of its broader mission to foster sustainable blue economy practices in Cyprus and Croatia, SeaTecHub is helping to develop tools, knowledge, and skills that empower institutions and policymakers to create more effective MSP strategies.
The conference served as a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and cross-sector collaboration — reinforcing the essential role of statistics and technology in supporting resilient marine governance and environmental protection.
